The people of Ecuador are in two people groups – about half are Spanish and the other half Amerindian.  They are the world’s largest exporter of bananas.  Ecuador has had an unstable government for a very long time, and are starting to align more with the leftist governments in other parts of South America.  The culture is strongly shaped by Catholicism, and there have been some intimidation and violence against other evangelical churches.  Pray for unity among the denominations and an increase in the spiritual life of all. The Dominican Republic shares the eastern portion of an island with Haiti in the Caribbean.  They have had five hundred years of turmoil, from European colonization starting with Columbus, foreign disease that wiped out one million indigenous people, and the importation of slaves for the development of large sugar cane plantations.  Today there is much corruption, violent crime and promiscuity in the society, which makes it difficult for Christian involvement.  The Catholic church enjoys a privileged status from the Pope, while other denominations are still ostracized. Djibouti is a small country between Ethiopia and Somalia, and has possibly the hottest average temperatures on earth.  Lack of water, arable land and natural resources makes the country dependent on French aid and the American military base there.  Unemployment is 50-80% and is combined with an addictive qat consumption (an amphetamine-like plant that grows in the area).  Missions is difficult there due to the terrain and it is almost all Muslim.  The American military base is very strategic there and provides most of the employment.  Pray that the American and French aid to the country will meet both their […]
