The Dominican Republic shares the eastern portion of an island with Haiti in the Caribbean. They have had five hundred years of turmoil, from European colonization starting with Columbus, foreign disease that wiped out one million indigenous people, and the importation of slaves for the development of large sugar cane plantations. Today there is much corruption, violent crime and promiscuity in the society, which makes it difficult for Christian involvement. Djibouti is a small country between Ethiopia and Somalia, and has possibly the hottest average temperatures on earth. Lack of water, arable land and natural resources makes the country dependent on French aid and the American military base there. Unemployment is 50-80% and is combined with an addictive qat consumption (an amphetamine-like plant that grows in the area).
