Gabon is on the equator in central coastal Africa. Two-thirds of the land is tropical rainforest. It is one of the wealthier African countries and has a stable government. The Catholic church was dominant in the past but has been declining. Witchcraft, black magic, and other animist spirits are strong influences. Djibouti is a small country between Ethiopia and Somalia, and has possibly the hottest average temperatures on earth. Lack of water, arable land and natural resources makes the country dependent on French aid and the American military base there. Unemployment is 50-80% and is combined with an addictive qat consumption (an amphetamine-like plant that grows in the area). Missions is difficult there due to the terrain and it is almost all Muslim. The American military base is very strategic there and provides most of the employment.
