Fiji is a small country and group of islands in the South Pacific. It is known for its coral reefs, sparkling clear lagoons, scuba diving and snorkeling. Many are descendants from indentured servants imported by the British from 1879 to 1916. There have been several coups over recent years, and the fact that residents cannot own land has made many people emigrate away from the islands. The Dominican Republic shares the eastern portion of an island with Haiti in the Caribbean. They have had five hundred years of turmoil, from European colonization starting with Columbus, foreign disease that wiped out one million indigenous people, and the importation of slaves for the development of large sugar cane plantations. Today there is much corruption, violent crime and promiscuity in the society, which makes it difficult for Christian involvement.
