Immanuel means “God with us”

It is one of the most comforting names for Jesus. During those times when we’re in despair and cry out to God, we want to know God is with us. To know He has not abandoned us in our most desperate need. When we are scared; when we don’t know what to do or where to turn; we want to know God is with us. To know He hears us, understands our pain, cares for us, and most importantly, has not forgotten us. God is with us. And in our times of joy when our hearts are overflowing, we thank God for His grace and blessings in our life, and for being with us.

Immanuel is the Hebrew word for “God with us”. It is mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God’s presence was with his people in the tabernacle. In the New Testament, God “became flesh and made his dwelling among us.” (John 1:14). Jesus came to teach us, love us, show us who God is, and ultimately to be the sacrifice for our forgiveness. But He did not leave us alone. Through the Holy Spirit that Jesus sent to us, we know we can always have God with us. Immanuel.
