The Dominican Republic shares the eastern portion of an island with Haiti in the Caribbean. They have had five hundred years of turmoil, from European colonization starting with Columbus, foreign disease that wiped out one million indigenous people, and the importation of slaves for the development of large sugar cane plantations. Today there is much corruption, violent crime and promiscuity in the society, which makes it difficult for Christian involvement. Costa Rica, an agricultural land between Nicaragua and Panama, is a stable influence to the surrounding land conflicts. Roman Catholicism is the official state religion, and although other religions are not illegal, they are not quite equal before the law either. The main issue seems to be unity among churches and denominations, which have left some leaving the Catholic church, others returning to the familiarity when evangelical churches did not continue to disciple, and declining church attendance for all.
