The answer to life and all its riddles can be found in these few statements that Jesus made to his disciples right before he predicted his death.  These are so good, that it is better just to let Jesus’ words stand by themselves. “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” (Matthew 16, verse 23) God’s concerns for us go beyond just merely human concerns.  God is concerned with our soul. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their […]
Who is Jesus?  Who is the Messiah?  Who or what is the Rock? This small passage in the book of Matthew reveals a lot and questions a lot.       Peter and The Messiah ~ Matthew 13:16-19   When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He asked them, “Who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the […]
“Don’t you remember?”, Jesus asks his disciples. Silence. “It’s not about the bread.”  (shaking his head) “Oh, now we get it!”, exclaim the disciples. Jesus smiles and laughs to himself. That’s how I like to imagine the conversation went in Matthew 16. It’s kind of an odd passage for Matthew to interject in the middle of his writing, but it shows the human nature of Jesus, with emotions and personality, and an enormous capacity to care about people.  He was also God in human form, for no one else could do what Jesus did without fault.  He came out of heaven to live among the poor and […]
This is the question a co-worker asked me a few weeks ago.  It is an important question, and honestly, a difficult one to try to answer.  My friend was having difficulty reconciling what she saw around the world with her Christian beliefs.  “There are a billion muslims,” she said, “I can’t see how God will send a billion people to hell when they are only following the only culture and traditions they have ever known.” She asked this question a few days before the Paris terror attacks.  I don’t know if our conversation would have been different if it had taken […]
