Bulgaria is a Balkan state that adjoins Turkey, Greece, Macedonia, Serbia and Romania. It has been a nation since the 5th century but rarely an independent state. It was ruled by Ottoman Empire for about 500 years, then later under Communist rule until 1989. Orthodoxy was the state religion until Communism took over in 1945. It is one of the riches states in Asia due to their oil and gas reserves, and has free education and health care, no income tax for most, and heavily subsidized housing, fuel and food. Brazil has become a leading mission-sending nation as well as having one of the largest groups of missionaries there. Botswana is in the southern part of Africa. The Kalahari Desert covers 80% of the country and is prone to severe droughts. Life expectancy is 53 years. AIDS has devastated the country, having the world’s second-highest prevalence of AIDS after Swaziland. There were many gospel missionaries of the past, but tribal culture remains strong. Pray for the missionaries and churches that are there. They are not forgotten. Pray they may reach the people with the message of love and hope in Jesus Christ, who also died for them.
